Youtube
Youtube is a great resource. But with so many content creators, it can take a while to figure out who’s really worth listening to.
These are some of my favourite youtubers:
Caleb of DSLR Video Shooter has been absolutely on point with all of his recommendations and often has advice and gear reviews to suit every pocket. I even purchased one of his courses on dslracademy.com when i purchased my latest camera
Voted one of the top creators on youtube, Joshua Martin is thoughtful and precise in his gear reviews, and tests. Between him and Caleb, you can be sure that you’re purchasing excellent gear.
Justin Odisho taught me a lot about video editing in premiere. Highly recommend. Also check out Casey Farris’ channel for tips on editing in Da Vinci Resolve.
There are also some great youtube tutorials on colour grading in Lightroom and other programs. I took my colour grading to new heights thanks to Maarten Schrader’s easy to follow along tutorials.
Online Courses
For those who prefer a little more structure, paid online classes can be the best way to go. So far I have taken courses on Udemy, Lynda, and Masterclass and enjoyed and benefitted from all of them. You can often find great courses at a fraction of the price of traditional colleges/ film schools.
Websites & Forums
There are numerous websites and forums where you can read about everything film and photography. Some of my favourites:
www.nofilmschool.com - “No Film School is the leading worldwide community of filmmakers, video producers, and independent creatives. We cover the latest film, TV, and tech news to help make you a better filmmaker.”
www.videomaker.com - “Videomaker is a magazine publication dedicated to video production. The magazine's publisher/editor, Matthew York, founded the publication with his wife Patrice York, Associate Publisher, to "empower people to make video and to democratize and enrich television."
www.hollywoodreporter.com - “The Hollywood Reporter is an American digital and print magazine, and website, which focuses on the Hollywood film, television, and entertainment industries. It was founded in 1930 as a daily trade paper, and in 2010 switched to a weekly large-format print magazine with a revamped website.”
The Hollywood Reporter Roundtable Discussion is a chance to hear top film makers dive deep into conversation about film with each other and highly recommended. It was watching one of these that I discovered master film maker Andrei Tarkovsky.
www.indiewire.com - “IndieWire is a film industry and review website that was established in 1996. The site's focus is independent film. IndieWire is a subsidiary of Variety, which is part of the Penske Media.”
